Field Research – Outcomes & Insights

Day 1

Concepting

The day started with a small lecture about the presentation for the Outcomes and Insights week and the vedute assignment.

After the explanation, we started brainstorming and sketching ideas for the vedute. Since we needed multiple concepts before selecting a final direction, we focused on creating several different ideas so that we would have enough options to choose from.

We started working on the presentation for the Outcomes and Insights assignment. In this presentation, we focused on both our Berlin and Amsterdam field research locations, as well as our selected gem: movement.

Day 2

Development

Today we finalised the presentation and submitted it on the DLO.

After handing it in, we returned to the vedute assignment and continued developing more design concepts. Creating additional ideas helped us compare possible visual directions and improve the strength of the concept.

I also spent time working on my portfolio. During this I updated:

Day 3

Refinement

We practiced the presentation and made the final adjustments. Angela and I also discussed the different vedute designs in more detail, comparing the strongest concepts and thinking about which visual language best represented our research.

I also continued updating my portfolio, this time working on:

Finally, I reviewed my personal learning goal about Space Invaders and Micro:bits. Although I did not yet have time to start building it, I used this moment to reflect on how it could connect to the minor.

Day 4

Presentation

Today we presented our work, including both location analysis and our vedute ideas.

We received feedback on our ideas, which we used to finalise the concept.

After the presentation, Angela and I discussed what kind of story and narrative should be behind the vedute. This helped us think more deeply about the meaning of the concept rather than only the visual result.

This week we mainly focused on bringing together insights from the past two weeks. One of the most important things I learned was how valuable it is to move from research to presentation. Instead of only collecting observations from Amsterdam and Berlin, we now had to put two locations up against each other and look at differences, similarities, movement, time of day, etc.

The vedute assignment also taught me the importance of concept development through iteration. Creating multiple ideas made it easier to compare concepts and select the strongest direction.

Another important part of this week was the continued development of my portfolio. Updating my work helped me reflect on the past weeks and understand what I still need to work on.

Finally, discussing the narrative behind the vedute helped me realise that design is not only about visuals, but also about the story, context, and meaning behind the final concept.

1.4 The student demonstrates the value of the design from the perspective of the different stakeholders.

By presenting our findings and discussing our Vedute concepts, I learned how to communicate the relevance and value of design decisions to different audiences.

2.1 The student acquires knowledge from other disciplines and masters methods to develop new work.

Creating the presentation and developing Vedute concepts required combining insights from multiple disciplines and the previous two weeks.

2.2 The student shares relevant knowledge and skills from their own discipline to help others develop new ways of working and thinking.

During discussions about presentations, visual communication, and interactive concepts, I was able to contribute ideas from my game development background and help shape the final direction of our work.

2.3 The student formulates personal learning goals, plans activities around those learning goals, and monitors their own development.

Updating my portfolio and reviewing my personal learning goal helped me evaluate my progress throughout the minor and identify areas where I still want to improve.

2.5 The student demonstrates critical ability regarding their own contribution to the group work.

This week involved reflecting on previous projects and evaluating both my contributions and areas for improvement. It helped me become more aware of my strengths and weaknesses within collaborative projects.
